Apart from the staff team, all the leaders on Iwerne Holidays are volunteers. Many of these are experienced schoolteachers, bringing groups of pupils from their schools.
A number of undergraduates who came on Iwerne as teenagers also serve as ‘Scampers’ (responsible for many practical tasks) and junior leaders. We find that this combination of youth and experience, plus a high ratio of leaders to members, contributes to a lively and well-organised atmosphere.
Because of our focus on leadership development, we take the ongoing training of leaders seriously, holding regular conference and events ahead of the main summer holidays. We ensure that leaders responsible for different activities are trained appropriately and where necessary have the relevant qualifications. We also seek to involve some of the Sixth Formers on each holiday in setting a positive tone and welcoming newcomers.
All of our staff and leaders are required to give appropriate independent references and to have an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclouse & Barring Service (formerly CRB) before they are able to lead at Iwerne.
