Summer

"Iwerne is the perfect blend of activities and chill-time" (Member)

The high-point of the Iwerne year are the three summer holiday parties, held at Gresham’s School in north Norfolk. Whether you’re looking for the high octane excitement of karting or banana boating, a new challenge like High Ropes or windsurfing, or simply want to relax on the beach or soak up some culture at a National Trust property, Iwerne really does have something for everyone.

We will be running three summer holiday parties again in 2018…

Holiday B: 24 July - 2 August

Activities

Each day of the holidays there are loads of different activities to choose from. In the morning, most activities take place on site at Gresham’s. These will usually include several sports like touch rugby, football and lacrosse; some home-made Iwerne games like bicycle polo, Danish Longball and Crocker; and quieter activities such as arts and crafts. Alternatively simply grab a racquet and head over to the grass tennis courts, or just snooze in a deck chair.

Afternoons are usually off-site with up to a dozen different options. For those who enjoy watersports, we’re very close to the Norfolk Broads where we sail and windsurf. We also take our own fleet of very easy to use sit-on-top kayaks to the beautiful River Bure. If you're a beginner, there's plenty of help and tuition to get you started. If you're more experienced, we can tailor sessions to test and stretch your skills. And if you're need is for speed, then head out to the powerboat lake, where you'll be flung around on a variety of inflatable donuts and bananas.

Just down the road from Gresham’s are some of the famous award-winning Norfolk beaches, including Holkham and Wells-next-the-Sea. Most afternoons include the option of a visit to the seaside for anything from power-kiting to a tide-race and our very own Beach Olympics.

Other active options include karting, off-road cycling and High Ropes. Most afternoons there’s also some sort of on-site tournament, be it a traditional game of 11-aside football or the famous Iwerne Wide Game.

And we always make sure there are a few gentler activities. Norfolk is studded with great places to visit - castles, zoos, stately homes, even the country's largest private collection of tanks! Depending on the tide, we may even be able to hire a boat to see the seals at Blakeney Point.

People

Around 100 teenagers come on each holiday, drawn from about 30 different boarding schools. Up to half of those on any holiday may be new to Iwerne, so we work hard at welcoming and involving people right from the start. Every summer people make great friendships at Iwerne, many of which last for years to come.

Everyone is part of a small group of boys or girls in the same school year, with two or three leaders assigned to look after them. So even if you don’t know many others at first, you’re already part of a group for mealtimes and activities.

The leadership is made up of the full-time Iwerne staff, plus a team of volunteer leaders, including many schoolteachers and undergraduates.

Location

Since 2003, Iwerne Holidays have been held at Gresham's School in beautiful North Norfolk (map here). The school is excellently equipped with modern accommodation (mostly in singles and rooms of 2-4) and superb sporting facilities. These include grass and hard tennis courts, two astroturfs, an indoor heated swimming pool, sports hall, squash courts, extensive games fields and pitching and putting courses. At the heart of the site is ‘Dave’s Diner’, which serves as the social centre for the Holidays and the venue for evening entertainment.

Food

We bring our own team of experienced volunteer cooks to provide delicious, healthy, home-made food. We are able to cater for different dietary needs.

Cost

The holidays in 2017 are excellent value at £495 which includes full board and all activities. The cost is kept to a minimum as the leaders’ team also contribute. For those who would otherwise be unable to come, some bursaries are available. A coach from London is arranged at a very reasonable price.
