Combine travel and the taste of a totally different culture with an opportunity to serve God and to experience life in the Developing World. Since 2002, Iwerne has been sending out teams of school leavers to the Gambia on the West African coast. The project is run by Crosslinks, an Anglican missionary agency, with over 80 years experience.
Each team is made up of eight Gap Year students and two carefully-selected graduate leaders. The team fly out in January and return mid-May. Over their four months, they teach in schools, run children's activity weeks and help with practical tasks like decorating a nursery or plastering a classroom. There's also plenty of time to hang out on the beach, explore the country and take a couple of team holidays inland.
The project costs approximately £2500, which includes flights, insurance, food and lodging, and holidays. Applications from Upper Sixth Formers are welcomed from December and interviews usually take place before Easter. The team meets for a couple of weekends during the autumn and a five-day orientation course a month before departure.
